Additives to enhance the performance of adhesives and sealants

Anja Baumann – Ana Belen Sanchez Gorjon
ELEMENTIS

Elementis develops and manufactures a comprehensive selection of additives that enhance the performance of adhesives and sealants and positively impact the production process.
Within the company’s product range, Elementis offers a variety of rheological additives suitable for both aqueous and non-aqueous systems. These additives are designed to optimize adhesive systems, ensuring superior results.

NON-AQUEOUS SYSTEMS

For non-aqueous systems, the company offers Thixatrol® and Thixcin® organic thixotropic rheological additives based on castor wax derivatives or olyamides. They require a specific activation temperature window to achieve optimum performance and provide excellent sag resistance and thixotropy, even at extremely high film thicknesses. At Elementis, we have developed additives that can be activated within different temperature windows (from 40º C to 100º C).

The modern Thixatrol grades offer wider temperature activation ranges, resulting in more robust performance and shorter process times, enabling time and energy savings and leading to higher production capacity.

CLAY-BASED TECHNOLOGY

Under the brand name Bentone®, we offer our natural claybased technology. Hectorite’s distinctive platelet shape and high surface area make it exceptionally effective in building viscosity and providing sag control and suspension properties in waterborne systems.
Bentone® clays can also be used in solvent-borne and solvent-free systems. In articular, these hectorite clays are modified with quaternary ammonium compounds, becoming organoclays. This transformation changes their hydrophilic nature into a more organophilic (oil-loving) form, making them highly effective in non-aqueous systems and a versatile additive for different formulations. Benefits include improved storage stability (antisedimentation) and enhanced sag resistance.

WATERBORNE SYSTEMS

Rheolate® range was designed for waterborne systems. Elementis offers Rheolate® alkali-swellable rheological additives based on vinyl copolymer chemistry, known for their ability to swell and thicken when neutralized with alkali.
The company also offers nonionic synthetic associative thickeners, which do not require special activation or pH adjustment and can be added at various stages of the production process.

WETTING AND DISPERSING  AGENTS

Nuosperse® identifies our range of wetting and dispersing agents, where customers can find a broad selection of options to improve particle wetting and ensure long-term anti-settling performance in both aqueous and non-aqueous environments.

DEFOAMERS

To further enhance the product’s finish and help prevent and eliminate foam formation, which can cause defects and reduce production efficiency, Dapro® defoamers are a valuable addition to the customer’s ‘toolkit’.
